Themed Issue of New Media and Society: ‘10 years of Facebook’

Guest editors: Siân Lincoln, Liverpool John Moores University, UK and Brady Robards, Griffith University, Australia

In early 2014 Facebook will have been online for ten years. Over the past ten years, Facebook has accumulated over a billion users globally, has achieved an estimated market value of over $100 billion, and has consistently been the most used social network site when compared to its competitors to the point of ubiquity. For many, Facebook has transformed the ways in which we communicate with each other in practically every aspect of our lives. Facebook has also attracted harsh criticism from users for its approach to privacy and transparency, and is regularly at odds with governments and other institutions over regulation and control. Facebook blurs traditional lines between what is private and what is public, while often complicating social relations by naming them and making them visible. The implications associated with the social network’s rise to dominance are complex and sometimes challenging, from both the micro levels of the individual through to the macro levels of society more broadly.

In this themed issue ‘10 years of Facebook’ we wish to explore the current ‘state of play’ with regards to the social, cultural and political significance of Facebook. Our aim is to bring together current academic debates surrounding this ubiquitous social network site to assess how, after ten years in existence, Facebook has made its mark on contemporary society as a space for social, cultural and political interactions. In addition, we wish to explore new and emerging approaches to the study of Facebook that interrogate the often complex relationships between the site, its users and everyday contexts.

We welcome short 250 word abstracts that reflect on ‘10 years of Facebook’, taking stock of the impact the site has had on contemporary social life. While attending to this broad aim, proposed articles will also need to address a more specific theme. Potential themes include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Identity
• Performance and representation
• Youth cultures and subcultures
• Privacy
• Friendship
• Relationships
• Fandom
• Age/ageing
• Before life and after life
• Political activism
• Social movements
• Regulation and control
• Trolling

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted to Siân Lincoln (s.lincoln@ljmu.ac.uk) by Wednesday 10th April 2013. On the basis of these short abstracts, invitations to submit full papers (of no more than 8000 words) will then be sent out in late April. Full papers will be due by August 31, and will undergo the usual New Media & Society peer review procedure. Invitation to submit a full paper in no way guarantees acceptance into the issue.

Dear colleague, I am delighted to announce the new issue (17:3-4) of Information Polity, focusing on ICT, Public Administration and Democracy in the Coming Decade and edited by Albert Meijer, Frank Bannister and Marcel Thaens. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the permanent study group on e-government of the European Group for Public Administration, we decided to take the risk and edit a volume on ‘ICT and Public Administration and Democracy in the Coming Decade’. The 20th anniversary had already been used to look back at the work of this study group and this resulted in a rich special issue of Information Polity .We felt that we should now, as a counterweight to these backward looking reflections, look forward. This collection of papers celebrates the fact that research into e-governance is alive and well and presents cutting edge knowledge for academics and policy-makers. Introduction ICT, Public Administration and Democracy in the Coming Decade A. Meijer, F. Bannister, M. Thaens Section One: the past and the present situation as starting point for thinking about the future. What lessons for the future can be learned if we look at the practice (Bannister and Connolly) and the visions (Taylor) of eGovernment in the past? Lessons can also be learned from complexities associated with eGovernment (Lips). Knowing what we know now, how can we deal with these complexities? Forward to the past: Lessons for the future of e-government from the story so far F. Bannister, R. Connolly The Information Polity: Towards a two speed future? J.A. Reading Habits in Different Communities

Several surveys by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project reveal interesting variations among communities in the way their residents read and use reading-related technology and institutions:

Book readers: Some 78% of Americans ages 16 and older say they read a book in the past 12 months. Urban (80%) and suburban (80%) residents are especially likely to have read at least one book in the past year. While rural residents are somewhat less likely to have read a book in the past year (71%), the book readers in rural areas read as many books as their counterparts in cities and suburbs.

Purposes for reading: Most of those ages 16 and older read books for pleasure, and that is especially true of suburban readers: 82% of suburbanites read for pleasure, compared with 79% of urban residents and 76% of rural residents. Urban residents (80%) and suburban dwellers (79%) are also especially likely to read to keep up with current events. Some 73% of rural residents do that. More than three-quarters of suburban residents (77%) read to research topics that interest them, compared with 74% of urban residents and 70% of rural residents. Finally, 57% of suburbanites and 58% of city dwellers read for school or work, compared with 47% of rural residents who do that.

Pew: How Teens Do Research in the Digital World

Some 77% of advanced placement (AP) and National Writing Project (NWP) teachers surveyed say that the internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly positive” impact on their students’ research work. But 87% say these technologies are creating an “easily distracted generation with short attention spans” and 64% say today’s digital technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically.”

According to this survey of teachers, the internet has opened up a vast world of information for today’s students, yet students’ digital literacy skills have yet to catch up:

• Virtually all (99%) AP and NWP teachers in this study agree with the notion that “the internet enables students to access a wider range of resources than would otherwise be available,” and 65% agree that “the internet makes today’s students more self-sufficient researchers.”
• At the same time, 76% of teachers surveyed “strongly agree” with the assertion that internet search engines have conditioned students to expect to be able to find information quickly and easily.
• Large majorities also agree with the notion that the amount of information available online today is overwhelming to most students (83%) and that today’s digital technologies discourage students from using a wide range of sources when conducting research (71%).
• Fewer teachers, but still a majority of this sample (60%), agree with the assertion that today’s technologies make it harder for students to find credible sources of information.

Given these concerns, it is not surprising that 47% of these teachers strongly agree and another 44% somewhat believe that courses and content focusing on digital literacy should be incorporated into every school’s curriculum.

55% of registered voters have watched political videos online this election season. We asked about six different types of political videos and found that, among registered voters who use the internet:

• 48% watch video news reports about the election or politics
• 40% watch previously recorded videos of candidate speeches, press conferences, or debates
• 39% watch informational videos online that explain a political issue
• 37% watch humorous or parody videos dealing with political issues
• 36% watch political advertisements online
• 28% watch live videos of candidate speeches, press conferences, or debates

Pew: Event: Politics in a Networked Era

If you’re in the Washington area this Thursday evening, join us for a special event at the Pew Research Center with Pew Internet founder and director Lee Rainie. With Election Day around the corner, Rainie will discuss with Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut how politics has changed in an era of perpetual connectedness. Rainie will draw upon the latest research from Pew Internet and insights from his new book, Networked: The New Social Operating System, in exploring how the rise of the internet, cellphones and social media have reshaped campaigns and voter engagement with them. More generally, Rainie will trace how digital technology has helped change the social and political life of “networked individuals” by allowing people to act in large, loosely knit social networks.

PEW: Presidential Campaign Donations in the Digital Age

In total, 13% of all adults have made a contribution to one of the presidential candidates in this year’s election, and we presented these donors with a series of follow-up questions asking them how they made their contributions. Their answers indicate that offline methods (such as donating in person or via regular mail) remain the most common way that Americans contribute to political campaigns, but that online contributions represent a significant portion of the total. At the moment, donations directly from cell phones make up only a small component of the political giving universe.
